CTHVN is proud to partner with the Maastricht Approach Project!  M.A.P aligns with our mission, and was developed with many of the same ideas in mind. Learn more below!

Origins

The Maastricht Approach is an alternative model developed by Sandra Esher and Marius Romme in partnership with Voice Hearers in the United Kingdom. The approach “… was based on the premise that hearing voices is a normal human experience that has a personal meaning in relation with life history, which they seek to understand”.

The Goal of Recovery

Maastricht involves accepting and making sense of the experience as a means of providing both relief and the possibility of recovery!

  • Learn skills to cope and negotiate with voices, to build a more positive relationship with the voices.

  • Voice hearers can learn to have pride in their experience and to give their voices personal and positive meaning.

  • Create a life of which the voices become a part.

  • Learn to no longer be dominated by ones voices, and make their own choices.

Exploring Together

Persons participating in the interview are regarded as being the experts, and full partnership in the process of finding solutions to the “difficulties” of their experience.

The Maastricht questionnaire is a series of questions that encourage the participant to explore the experience of voice hearing, build trust, openness and understanding in their own experience in a structured way, while in supported environment.

  • Participants acknowledge and validate the experience of voice hearing.

  • Participants feel supported to overcome feelings of shame related to talking about their experiences.

  • Participants gain a better understanding of why they hear voices or experience problematic thoughts.

Sections Covered in Questionnaire:

  • Nature of the experience

  • Characteristics of the voices

  • The history of you hearing voices

  • How do you explain the origin of the voices
